Choosing Shade in the Sunniest City on Earth

Six structures compared honestly — what each one blocks, what it costs, what it asks of you afterward, and which Yuma patio it actually belongs on.

1. The Yuma sun problem, in numbers

  • Guinness World Record holder for the most sunshine on Earth: 91% of possible daylight hours, roughly 4,055 hours a year.
  • 118 days a year reach 100°F or higher.
  • July highs average 106–107°F, and midsummer overnight lows only ease into the low 80s — the slab never fully cools off.
  • About 3 inches of rain a year. Nothing washes, nothing cools, nothing interrupts the exposure.
  • Extreme UV in June, when the sun sits nearly overhead at midday and vertical surfaces stop helping.
  • 20–45°F cooler surfaces under shade at peak sun, per EPA heat-island research. That's surface temperature — concrete, decking, furniture — not the air.

3. Aluminum vs wood in the desert, honestly

Wood is the better-looking material to most eyes, and it's the worse-behaving one here. Four thousand hours of annual sunshine breaks down finishes, and three inches of rain a year means the timber is bone dry most of the time. Cedar checks, grays and eventually splits where fasteners hold it. Termites are a real consideration in the valley.

The maintenance schedule is the honest dividing line: wood wants an annual finish inspection and resealing on a cycle, forever. Aluminum — particularly wood-grain embossed Alumawood, now made by Four Seasons Building Products — carries a factory finish warranted against chalking, fading and peeling, doesn't warp or crack, and has nothing an insect wants.

If you're a winter resident who leaves in April, aluminum isn't a preference, it's the only sensible answer. Nobody is sealing a pergola in your absence in July.

4. Permits and HOAs in plain English

Both the City of Yuma and Yuma County require permits for nearly all new attached covers and full-size structures. The county does list a possible exempt permit for fabric shade structures under 200 square feet, which is the one common exception worth knowing about.

Park models and manufactured homes are a separate track entirely — accessory structures on those fall under Arizona's Office of Manufactured Housing. And in the Foothills, many communities layer HOA architectural review on top: elevations, materials, colors, heights, setbacks.

Requirements change, so always confirm current rules with the jurisdiction covering your address. On our jobs we prepare the drawings and handle the paperwork — you shouldn't have to learn a permit counter to get shade over your patio.

5. Wind and monsoons: what uplift actually means

A patio cover is a wing. Wind moving across the top drops the pressure above it and the structure tries to lift, which is why failures here almost always start at the connection points and not in the middle of a panel. Engineering for uplift means sizing posts, footings, anchors and fastener schedules to hold the roof down, not just hold it up.

Arizona structures are engineered to the state's design wind standards — around 115 mph under current codes — and you should confirm the exact requirement for your address with Yuma Building Safety. The July 2024 microburst in Fortuna Foothills was a useful reminder that this is a design question, not a paperwork question.

6. So what should you build?

For most Yuma homes the answer is an Alumawood patio cover in lattice or solid, and for anyone who wants the patio genuinely usable in summer with fans overhead, the insulated version. If your home is a park model or sits on a resort lot, start instead with park model & RV lot covers — different rules, different design, different approvals.
